Who we are |
A Brief History The only reference to the North of England Scottish Terrier Club prior to 1929 can be found in an article on the Scottish Terrier, published in 'Our Dogs' dated 20 July, 1907, The records show that when the Club applied to the Kennel Club for registration in April 1929, the Secretary at that time stated on the application form that "No other association, club or society had ever used the above title" and approval was granted in June 1929. At is formation the objective of the Club was to encourage in every way the Scottish Terrier, more especially in the North of England, with the proviso it would not compete with any other organisation. The officials at that time were President: Mr W P Wood (Rombolds), Chairman: Mr A Haxton and Secretary: Mr J Robertson (Denbrae). In 1936 the Kennel Club granted Championship status to the Club and its first show was held on the 14 July 1936 at the Textile Hall in Bradford. The judge on the day was Mr G Davidson and he awarded the Dog CC to Ch. Heather Realisation and the Bitch CC to Ch. Gleniffer Leading Lady. The Club went from strength to strength, then unfortunately came the outbreak of war, with 1939 being the last show before hostilities commenced. The judge was Mr W M Singleton and he awarded the Dog CC to Ch.Bradthorn Bullion and the Bitch CC to Heather Ophelia. The first show at the end of the war was held in 1946 and according to Mrs D Caspersz breed notes in "Our Dogs" - "it was a very splendidly organised effort and appeared to run from start to finish on oiled wheels. The judge on the day was Mr W Crawford who put in a hard day's concentration and certainly drew a grand entry to sort out". The Dog CC went to Ortley Monty and the Bitch CC to Allbright Gay Model. In 1947 the Club held two Championship shows, in May and October, with both shows having separate judges for dogs and bitches. For the next two years the Club still had two judges but reverted back to only one Championship show per year. Like all good things, they come to an end and in the early 1960's the Club went through a few bad years with discord among its Members and Committee, culminating in the Club losing its Championship status in 1965. There are no records as to why this happened, as all records were destroyed in a fire at the home of the Secretary. Mr A Gill took over as Secretary and with the hard work of the Committee managed to get the Club started again by holding fund raising events. All their hard work paid off and within five years the Club was given back its Championship status. Mrs G Yates judge the Club's first Championship show after its reinstatement and she awarded the Dog CC to Ch.Gaywyn Kingson and the Bitch CC to Tiddleymount Artist Model. The good years were back and on the 24th July 1994 the Club held it 50th Championship Show with its President, Mr Alan Gill (Gillson) judging the show. He awarded the Dog CC to Kentwella Rob Roy and the Bitch CC to Ch.Mayson Monolisa. At the present time the Club is still running two highly successful shows a year, an Open Show in February and a Championship Show in October.
